Baptism/Communion
The United Methodist Church recognizes two sacraments: Communion and Baptism.
Communion
New Hope practices “Open Communion”. As our tradition states it; “Christ our Lord invites you to His table all who love Him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another.” We believe that Jesus Christ gets the one and only vote regarding who is welcome to receive Communion. That means regardless of your denominational background; regardless of how long it has been since you have attended Worship; regardless of where you feel your relationship with God stands right now – YOU ARE WELCOME to the Table.
We celebrate Communion on the first Sunday of every month at our Traditional and Contemporary Worship Services.
Baptism
In fancy “Churchy” terms, we often refer to “The Baptismal Covenant” with God. What that really means is that Baptism is a tangible sign of a relationship initiated by God who by His grace and love “adopts” us as children and heirs of the Heavenly Kingdom. Baptism brings us into union with Christ, with each other, and with the Church in every time and place.
Because baptism initiates us into Christ’s holy Church and not only into a specific denomination, New Hope recognizes all Christian baptisms, and all forms of Christian baptism are considered valid (sprinkling, pouring, immersion, infant, child or adult).
And because God is the one who “does the job” of Baptizing, Holy Baptism is administered only once. God does it perfectly the first time, so we do not believe it is ever necessary to be “Re-Baptized”. However, since we often fall down on the human side of the Baptismal relationship with God, our Baptism may be reaffirmed each time we partake of the Sacrament of Holy Communion or through formal services of “Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant.”
